FAQs

How do air coolers work?

Air coolers are also known as evaporative air coolers as they work by evaporating water to cool the space around them. They pull in hot air from the room and pass it through a wet pad or filter. As the air flows over the water, particles on the water's surface are carried away as they evaporate, taking the heat with them. The evaporated air and subsequent water droplets are circulated by the fan, helping to lower the temperature of the room with cooled air.

Are air coolers more effective than traditional fans?

An evaporative air cooler is a highly effective way of cooling your surroundings. They work to lower the temperature of the room by drawing in warm air and cooling it before releasing it and circulating it around the room. Traditional fans provide temporary relief by evaporating sweat off the skin, but can only circulate air around a room which does not affect overall air temperature.

Are air coolers expensive to run?

It is estimated that air coolers use around 70-80W of power, which means that you could run them for around 1p per hour. While the initial purchase cost is generally higher than that of a fan, air cooler fans are seen as more effective by producing cooler air rather than just circulating the air that is already in a room. Even a budget air cooler is cheaper to run than portable air conditioning units, making them a smart choice for cooling.

How are air coolers different to traditional air conditioners?

Both are used to cool air in the room, but unlike air conditioners, air coolers use the process of evaporation to cool the air. An air conditioner uses a refrigeration cycle to cool the air, extracting heat from the air and transferring it outside, cooling the room in the process. Air coolers are more energy-efficient compared to air conditioning units.

How can I control the temperature of my air cooler effectively?

Many air coolers allow you to add ice packs or ice cubes to help lower the temperature of the air being circulated. Turning the device off periodically can also help to reduce any humidity produced by the cooler, controlling the temperature more effectively.

It is recommended to follow the manufacturer's guidelines to get optimum use and temperature control of your specific air cooler model.

How do I find the best air cooler for my space?

The following factors are important to consider in order to find the right air cooler to suit your needs:

Cooling capacity

A larger room will typically require an air cooler with a greater cooling capacity to cool a space quickly and effectively

Portable or fixed

Consider whether you need a portable air cooler that you can easily move around, or if a fixed unit would be more suitable for your needs.

Special features

Some air coolers come equipped with features such as timer settings, remote control settings and adjustable fan speeds. A smart air cooler may offer smartphone control options, voice control and energy usage reports.
